3-D Secure, adopted by Visa as Verified by Visa and by MasterCard as MasterCard SecureCode, is another tool to help with the prevention of fraud similar to the pin code security of cardholder present transactions.

3-D Secure works by sending a message to the server of the payment gateway or Cardinal Commerce with a few details about the transaction. The server then sends a message back to your server with the URL of the 3-D Secure server setup by the card issuer. The page at this URL is then shown to the customer inside an iFrame. If they have previously registered, they simply enter their password. If not, they simply enter a few security details to register.

The service provides additional protection for online store owners as only the cardholder will know the password as well as increased confidence from the customer.

There are currently 2 ways to setup 3-D Secure with Viper Cart. If your payment gateway has it's own platform for 3-D Secure then it is simply a case of asking them to enable it and then enabling it via the administration area. If they don't then you will need to sign up for an account with Cardinal Commerce who pass an authentication value to the software on sucessful login / registration by the customer ready to pass over to the payment gateway. For offsite gateways, you don't need to worry about this as it is up to the gateway to implement it. 3-D Secure isn't possible for offline card processing.
